What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique Identifier that points to a certain site on the World Wide Web.
Each computer on the Internet has a unique numeric address, like a telephone number, referred to as the IP address. These numbers are not user-friendly and give no indication as to what this address contains. A domain name is a mnemonic that is easier to remember and could indicate what the web site contains. It is easier to remember PaletteWebDesign.co.za than 234.123.07.45. Domain Name Servers are computers that will take the Domain Name and look up the relevant IP address.

Choosing your Domain Name

Your domain name should consist of the letters in the alphabet (A - Z), the numbers (0 - 9) and the hyphen (-), and should not have more than 30 characters. To check if your domain name is available for registration, visit WHOIS.

Domain name registration

To register your domain name, you need to know the IP address that your website will have. Part of your website IP address will be information relating to the server where your website will be hosted, i.e. with an ISP or a hosting company. As your hosting company, Palette website design will complete the registration form on your behalf and register your name with the administrators. We already have the required information such as the name server details.
